Informix Developer license?
Posted in 2009
A newcomer asked whether IBM offers a free developer/student license for Informix so he could build DataBlade extensions, and whether the Windows-only DataBlade Developer's Kit (DBDK) is mandatory. Answers pointed him to IBM's Informix Developer Edition page, plus the free IIUG developer edition (from the IIUG members' download area) and the IBM IDS Virtual Appliance — both non-time-limited with full Enterprise features but capped on users, CPU VPs and memory. Art Kagel confirmed DBDK is not required; it's just a GUI front end, and DataBlades can be built from the command line.

Does IBM offer a developer license for the Informix database, like Oracle? I plan to use Informix for developing data type extensions, etc., using data blades. Is this possible without the professional 'authorized user license' (Is there a research/ community edition for students)? I am a beginner wrt Informix, so could someone direct me to this information? Thanks a ton!

Thanks for the link! I see they have a Developer edition for "unlimited trial". But, I see that the Informix Datablade Developer's Kit runs only on Windows. http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/informix/blades/dbdk/ Can datablades be developed (in the proper manner) without using the developer's kit, or is this tool a necessity? Thanks.
You can download the free IIUG developer's edition from the IIUG web site or the IBM IDS Virtual Appliance which includes a developer edition from the IBM web site. Both are free versions with ALL Enterprise Edition level features enabled and they are not time-bombed. They are only limited as to the number of concurrent users and the number of CPU VPs and amount of memory you can assign to the server. To download the IIUG edition, just go to the member's pages and click on Downloads and you'll see it in the page heading. Art Art S. You don't need the 'Datablade Developer's Kit' to buld datablades. It's just a Window Geek GUI for the commandline challenged. Art Art S.
