(See the Wikipedia article at "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_(operating_system)" for more information, including the fact that it seems the MacOS X kernel is a hybrid system with some BSD functionality. Given that, maybe Daniel's statement is accurate enough, albeit a little too simple.) -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2008.0513 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ "Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we shall never cease to be amused." BSD came first ... at UC Berkeley. Mach came later. This is not an either BSD or Mach ... this is a both. Had Gumby agreed with me that Mac OSX is based on BSD and added that it was done using the Mach kernel this entire thread could have died long ago. This issue that he claimed it was Mach and not BSD. And that statement is totally incorrect. It is clearer to say it is both as is stated in the Wikipedia listing. -- Daniel A. Now all manufactures use assembly lines when they produce cars thus they are all Fords. That's you logic. At CMU there was enough modifications to the kernel that denotes Mach as its own flavor of *NIX. You seem to suggest that since Mach is BSD based and MacOS is based on Mach, then MacOS is BSD. This totally skips the radical changes made to the kernel by Mach. But its useless to explain their significances because Daniel because his knowledge of OSs comes from Wikipedia instead of working on them. > Had Gumby agreed with me that Mac OSX is based on BSD and added that > it was done using the Mach kernel this entire thread could have died > long ago. Daniel, Any *NIX is going to either be an AT&T flavor or a BSD flavor at its roots. You don't know Mach or understand the differences in the kernel. To put your statement in terms that everyone here can understand... The DBA equivelent to what you are saying is that because IBM inveneted SQL and the relational engine concept, then *all* RDBMS databases in use today are essentially DB2. Like I said Daniel, I was certified NeXTStep in '92. When did you get certified? Did you own a black slab? Did you get the Intel port CDs? Didn't think so. For those of you who do write programs, Objective-C was/is a brilliant combination of C and SmallTalk. If you use Gnu C compilers, you have an Objective C compilier just not the relevant libraries. Daniel and once and for all... Mach is Mach. Its a CMU derivation of a *NIX. Mach inherits from BSD however, its microkernel architecture is different enough that one can show that Machi is not BSD.
