In 5.xx the sqlexec process did all of its own I/O except buffer flushing (though if a FG Write was needed if was willing to do that too) so there were many fewer conditions that 5.xx clients officially waited for. You were still waiting for I/O it's just that there was not condition address identifying the fact. Art S. Kagel
