Dumb question

Hi all, Dumb question: Is it safe to edit my onconfig file when the database is live ? Or should I stop database with onmode, edit onconfig and then restart database with oninit ? Actually I have an edited onconfig.new file ready and I was about to backup onfig to say oncongig.old and replace it with my new onconfig. But then I had a moment of doubt. Can anyobody give me an answer (if not I'll go the safe way and do onmode first). TIA, Michael Martin
