Re: dbspace prior point in time recovery

Hey Rudy & ALL, Actually, i understand that why Informix does not support this but i am not not able to understand that when other vendors can give real ugly solution just for the sake of feature, then why Informix can not put in their product-for the sake of feature. For eg. big 'O' I was using Legato with Oracle 8.0.5.1 and tried all kind of Backup and Recovery with RMAN. But when I started to do Tablespace point in time recovery with RMAN-I was so pizzed off that company like Oracle can give this kind of solution and Oracle DBA will like them. Let me tell you how it works 1. First you have to install a seprate instance for RMAN-It's like sysutils DB but in a different database b'coz of Oracle one DB-one instance feature. 2. For the dbspcae point in time recovery(In target data base), one need to create a separte instance which is called CLONE INSTANCE. DBA has to move all the data files, redo log files, control files and all the stuff of the target db to clone instance. 3. Start your clone instance in nomount mode. 4. Recover your those tablespaces[which need point in time restore]prior point in time. 5. Take export of your tablespace 6. Go back to your target db 7. Import your clone instance tablespace in target tablespace. --PAINFUL SOLUTION-- When first time i did it, It took me 10 hrs for one tablespace. Let's say second time 3-4 hrs but Oracle DBA will say that their product support TABLESPACE POINT IN TIME RECOVERY WHICH INFORMIX DOES NOT. I talk to DB2 guys, it's just one statement for doing poit in time recovery. WHY....Informix can not give those kind of ugly solution for the sake of feature. Other eg Look at Oracle 8i features 1. EXPORTABLE TABLESPACES--one can put the entire tablespace on CD and then attach in different machine. I don't know that how Oracle implement this--But it sound very exciting. What i am trying to say is that Informix is really great in all but just for the sake of competition why it loose those kind of features. If there are not good solution then give ugly solution like other competitior. Sanjeev K.
