Thanks to ALL who ventured a reply to my problem The responses all hinged around "machinename:tapedev" in the tbconfig file. The solution seemed straightforward enough but when I tried it, I just couldn't get it to go. For some strange reason my version of Informix OnLine would not allow ssei-x as a machine name but would allow hpx. I suppose it just didn't like the little "-" in the name.
