Hi,
I am being asked to inquire if there is a way to decrease the block time during a BCV backup on?an IDS 11.5 FC2X@?database on an HP-UX ia64.? the typical?procedure being used is:
1. onmode? ?-l???????????? to roll logical log forward
2. onmode? -c???????????? force a checkpoint
3. onmode? -c??block?? to get ready for BCV split
4.?BVC split is done
5. onmode? -c? unblock??? to free up database for processing
The database has over 100 dbspaces.?? Are there any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Bruce

Well, provide some timings :

2 seconds?

How fast do you want it to go?

First of all, I'm thrilled to see another user with Informix on Itanic! We
sold a large amount of Informix into a customer last year, who's since gone
live, and really struggled event with IBM's help to find *any* customers
using IDS on ia64. I'd be interested in swapping experiences on a private
exchange ...
As to your question, I don't know any way. Your question implies that you
have problems. Here's mine from a typical night (last night):
02:02:55 2708 buffers dirty
02:02:55 oldest lsn loguniq 5501, logpos 0x4ca9018
02:02:55 2299 dirty pages are to be flushed
02:02:56 dskflush() took 1 seconds
02:02:56 wait4critex() took 0 seconds
02:02:56 409 buffers dirty
02:02:56 oldest lsn loguniq 5501, logpos 0x4ca9018
02:02:56 safe_dskflush() took 0 seconds
02:02:56 Checkpoint Completed: duration was 1 seconds.
02:02:56 Checkpoint loguniq 5501, logpos 0xa1fd018, timestamp: 0x9be332ef
02:02:56 Maximum server connections 4048
02:02:56 Buffer manager: starting coarse downgrades.
02:02:56 Dynamic Server blocked.
02:02:58 Buffer manager: finished coarse downgrades.
Starting threshold adjustments.
02:02:58 Buffer manager: finished threshold adjustments.
02:02:59 Dynamic Server unblocked.
so, 3 seconds blocked. Are you getting much longer times?
