Case INsensitive search with Informix?

Does anyone have any thoughts on how best to implement a case INsenstive search against an Informix 7.23 database? With Sybase I would just code "WHERE LOWER (db_column) = LOWER(:as_search_string)" - but, alas, Informix doesn't seem to support either the LOWER or UPPER functions that Sybase does. What other options are there?
