I think Informix still thinks UDO is something customers will be willing to pay extra for, so obviously they aren't going to give it away. I keep telling everyone at Informix who will listen to me that they should make THE server UDO (and by the way, UDO is not really an "add-on" to IDS, it is a whole new server, what used to be called IUS - Informix Universal Server. Only the name has changed.), so if you buy an Informix server, you have extensibility built in. That would be a true distinction from the competition. If extensibility was available at no extra cost, you would get developers using it because it is already there, and pretty soon you just might wind up with a lot of applications that REQUIRE Informix because no other dbms has that type of extensibility. Developers adding business logic to their database might realize they have the components of a marketable datablade, and start selling them, adding more momentum to Informix. They would realize more training and consulting revenue. All in all, a big win. By setting the cost of entrance high, they are discouraging wide adoption of the product. But I digress... +At 06:27 AM 6/17/98 , Mike Segel wrote: +>Uhmm, +>I thought Informix was nuking the 9.x line and doing a code merge into +>the 7.x +>stream. Next version out will be a merging of 7.3 and 9.14 code streams. But UDO will STILL be extra, even though it is the same executables. Last I heard, there will be some sort of serial # enabling to "turn on" the UDO piece. Still time for that to change, though.
