Re: Migration from SE 4.0 to Online 5.0

Viktor, just switching your backends (SE to Online) should not be too much of a hassle. We have done it before, however within the same release level (SE 4.0 to Online 4.0). The steps to move your data from one system to the other are described very well in the Online admin handbook (this is the German OEM version of Informix distributed by Siemens Nixdorf). Your frontends and applications should be able to run just as before. I would be very cautious about moving to a different DB vendor. This would mean that you have to rewrite all your applications from scratch, and the costs for that could be orders of magnitude higher than the price of the mere DB system. Also, you would throw away all the programming experience you have accumulated for Informix. IMHO, there is not too much difference among the different vendors of RDBMS out there. They all do pretty much the same job. You would probably not gain much by switching vendors.
