Not enough room in ROOT DBspace
Answered: green (solid confidence) — Root cause (an oversized PHYSFILE/LOGFILES copied from another server vs. a too-small ROOTSIZE) was diagnosed by multiple responders, and Steven confirmed reducing logical logs let the instance initialize.
Advisory only.
Posted in 2017
A user copying an ONCONFIG from an existing server couldn't initialize a new instance: oninit reported "Not enough room in ROOT DBspace" (3109038K requested vs ROOTSIZE 2097152K). Respondents explained that at disk initialization the physical log (PHYSFILE 2GB) and 106 x 10MB logical logs must all fit in the root chunk; on the source server they had been moved/grown into other dbspaces after setup, which the ONCONFIG doesn't record. Fix: initialize with a small physical log and few logical logs, then create log dbspaces and use onparams/sysadmin task() calls ('alter plog', 'add log') to move and resize them. The user did this successfully. A side question about ROOTNAME being 'ts_datadbs1' was answered: the name is arbitrary.

The config is the same as the other server has. What could be the issue ?
Thanks.

Response:
My guess is the server you copied this $ONCONFIG from has more then 1 chunk in
it's rootdbs, or the logical/physical logs are somplace else. From just the
$ONCONFIG portion listed, your 1st chunk of your rootdbs (which is all you
have allocated when you do an oninit -iy) is about 2Gb, but your PHYSFILE is
set to about 2gb, and then you additionally have 106 logical log files that
are 10Mb each (so that ends up being another 1gb of required space). So that's
why you are seeing:
Requested 3109038K, ONCONFIG value 'ROOTSIZE' 2097152K
So you need to bring the server up with smaller physical/logical log
configurations, then add space, and then move the physical log or move and add
the requested logical log files.
Jacques Renaut
IBM Informix Advanced Support
Reduce the size of your PHYSFILE. You probably moved it to another
dbspace after setting up the first server. Start it smaller, then
create the plog dbspace and move it there and resize.

It looks like your physical log is taking up most of your space. I would
imagine that this was moved and grown in your other instance.

Response:
On the server you are trying to duplicate, it's likely that the physical log
and/or the logical logs are not in the rootdbs. You can verify this by looking
at onstat -l and onstat -d output.
In onstat -l output it would look like this:
onstat -l
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 12.10.FC8 -- On-Line -- Up 00:15:07 --248084 Kbytes
Physical Logging
Buffer bufused bufsize numpages numwrits pages/io
P-2 0 64 125 4 31.25
phybegin physize phypos phyused %used
1:263 25000 11920 12 0.05
... <stuff removed>
address number flags uniqid begin size used %used
44d8af88 1 U-B---- 1 1:25263 5000 5000 100.00
44b68f68 2 U-B---- 2 1:30263 5000 5000 100.00
44c3ef40 3 U-B---- 3 1:35263 5000 5000 100.00
44c3efa8 4 U-B---- 4 1:40263 5000 5000 100.00
In the above output for the physical log you would look at the information
located below the "phybegin" label. In the above output it is 1:263. So that
means my physical log is in chunk 1 starting at page offset 263 into that
chunk.
For the logical logs, I list 4 above, you look at the data below the "begin"
column. In all 4 logs, the begin info is 1:<something>. So again the 1 means
chunk 1 of the system and then they all have different offsets into that chunk.
So in my case, my physical and logical logs are both in chunk 1. Chunk 1 is
the 1st chunk of the rootdbs. That is the only place when you initialize an
instance for the 1st time (so you are doing full disk initialization) that
they can be located. So since you have 3gb's worth of logical and physical log
file in the $ONCONFIG file you are copying, but your ROOTSIZE is only 2 gb.
That's why the server won't initialize. So for the server you are trying to
copy, it must have been set up in 3 steps. First initialize the server with
the -i flag...then add more space to the server with onspaces commands to add
chunks and or other dbspaces, then use onparam's to add/move your logical
logs, and also likely use onparams to increase the size/move your physical log.
If that was done, then you can't just copy the $ONCONFIG file from the 1
server....because there is nothing in the $ONCONFIG file that tells the
location of the physical and logical log. So when a server goes through disk
initialization for the 1st time, the physical and logical logs are located in
the 1st and currently only chunk of the rootdbs. After that they can be moved
and increased in size (which change the $ONCONFIG values) which would then
make using those setting in another server's $ONCONFIG file and trying to do
an oninit -iy impossible to achive because the size of those entities is too
big for the size configured for ROOTSIZE.
Jacques Renaut
IBM Informix Advanced Support
Thanks Jaques, that was a good explanation. And how about the first chunk, which is the ROOTNAME. On the other server has the same pagesize and disk size like the other chunks. That means I have to start first with ROOTNAME rootdbs, add the other dbspace with different pagesize , change onconfig with new ROOTNAME and start the instance again ?
You have a 2gb physical log and 1gb of logical logs (106 × 10mb) defined.
Reduce those to a small physical log and only 3 logical logs to initialize
the instance. Then once you define the dbspaves for logical and physical
logs you can redefine them as needed in these other dbspaces.

Hi Art, I reduced the number of logical logs to 4 and it was enough. I was asking before why the chunk ts_datadbs1 is the ROOTNAME and not ts_rootdbs Thank you.
No idea. You don't actually have to restart.
Boot the instance with the reduced physical and logical logs (6 logs is
enough).
Once up, create a physical log dbspace and a logical log dbspace.
Move the physical log to the physcial log dbspace, you can change the
size on the fly, or reset it in $ONCONFIG and reboot.
Create logical logs in the logical log dbspace, drop the logical logs
from the rootdbs.
A nice clean way to do all of this is to connect to the sysadmin
database with dbaccess and:
execute function task("alter plog", "<dbspace_name>", "<size>");
execute function task("add log", "<dbspace_name>", "<size>", "<number>");
replace dbspace_name, size and number with the values you want to use.
When dropping logical logs, you can't drop the current log, you have to
move off of it onto your new ones:
onmode -l will advance one log. That will still leave the starting login the old logs, so once you get advanced into the new logs, do an
"onmode -c" to force a checkpoint and make the current log the starting
log. You can do all of that from within sysadmin as well.

Hi Jack, thanks for your response. I already created physical and logical log dbspaces, moved the physical log to that dbspaces and created the rest of the logical logs in the other dbspace. But I was wondering why the first dbspaces is the ROOTNAME Thanks
You have:
ROOTNAME ts_datadbs1
In your $ONCONFIG? ts_datadbs1 should then be the logical name of your first
dbspace. Using the file:
ROOTPATH /storage/chunks/ts_rootdbs
Is that not what you see? What is the output of onstat -d?

Hi,
after a little test I would say: The value of ROOTNAME is arbitrary. Usually
it is rootdbs but other values are allowed.
Thank you,
Reinhard.
