I would strongly encourage the use of raw file space, if possible. This
is
especially true for OLTP systems. There is a performance hit in trying to
work
your way through the fat entries. Also, the unix io buffer cache is a
mixed blessing. The engine expects all data to be physically on disk at
the point of a checkpoint. If some of it is physically on disk and some
of it is still in a UNIX file buffer cache, and then you have a power
failure --- OPPS!
