The problem is One thing to point out -- since Informix does not currently let you index on a function, your selects will all be performing full table scans. Is it possible to include an additional column in the table that contains the name in lowercase? NB: I believe that Oracle has this problem as well. -Richard ps: No need to followup to say that Postgres allows you to do this. We know. If we want more info, we'll ask for it.
