Replying to my own posting (what a concept !!!) First, thanks for everyone who responded. I know this is a forum for this kind of thing, but I'm not shy when showing some appreciation for the help supplied. Second, the answer appears to be related to system locks. After checking the kernel setting, I discovered the limit was set to 100 (rather low, if you ask me). I haven't had the opportunity to adjust the kernel yet, but that looks like the source of the problem. I did try doing a transaction and an exclusive lock on the table, but that didn't seem to help. One suggestion was to use sar and monitor the 'lock' value while the delete is running. I'll try that and see if there is any difference with the exclusive lock. Third, I already recommended to Informix that they might want to improve the text displayed under these circumstances or at least expand the 'finderr' messages to include this situation. Thanks again.
