David, your explanation sounds very reasonable and logical. Nevertheless, tbzero solved my problem. It took only a few seconds to run, and afterwards, the engine came up without a glitch. I was able to unload all the tables I needed. Since I unloaded complete tables, I guess no indices were used and therefore possible index corruption didn't matter. I didn't bother doing a tbcheck since I will not use those databases any more.
