The collisions really aren't an issue. This is just the listener port. My understanding is that this works like telnet, ftp, etc. Once the connection is established, it moves to a different port. Besides these are not really "ports" but flags in a TCP header. <PROFESSOR MODE ON> The address is composed of network + host + port = socket. The "port" is not even evaluated until the packet hits the "host-to-host" layer which determines which process is waiting to accept delivery. Once the process has accepted the inbound packet, it spawns sub-process or lwt or forks and goes back to "listening". In Informix' case, it creates a session in the engine. Refer to the TCP/IP Protocol Suite Standard for a more in-depth discussion. <PROFESSOR MODE OFF> -d Tim Schaefer wrote in message <6c022l$641@camel15.mindspring.com>... >John wrote in message <01bd3672$81b77ee0$LocalHost@default>... >>Can anyone think of a reason why I can't re-use the same services numbers >>for engines on different physical servers ?? >> > > >You *can* do this, but from an enterprise network perspective I'd recommend >against it.
