Hung Server

We've recently been having a very strange issue with one of our
Informix Servers. It's IDS 7.31UD1 running on AIX 4.3.3. The server
appears to go into a vegetative state and is no longer controllable
through normal means.
Connections through dbaccess and all other means will hang on trying to
connect, but they never seem to timeout or die. All onmode commands
will hang indefinitely as well. The only way we have been able to shut
the database server down is the kill -9 the master process, and then
restart it through our normal scripts.
The funny thing is that the onstat commands all seem to work, but with
the following delay messages.
944:/dblogs> onstat -
The server did not respond within 5 seconds. Timing out.
The server did not respond within 5 seconds. Timing out.
Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.31.UD1 -- On-Line -- Up 01:01:15
-- 1884352 Kbytes
944:/dblogs>
Any of the onstat commands will give the "server did not respond"
messages, but then dump their normal output as they should. The online
log shows checkpoints happening at normal intervals so it looks like
the server is doing something.
When this happened to me yesterday I had to kill and restart the
database server twice to get it back up and running normally again.
I'm kind of at my wits end with this thing so I figured I'd post here.
Has ANYONE seen ANYTHING like this before? Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

The latest is UD8 IB and an upgrade to 10.00xC4 would be beneficial in performance and features and more stable. Art S. Kagel
