Informix OnLine 5.x is not the same as Informix Dynamic Server IDS 7.x or 9.x (nor yet the same as Extended Parallel Server, XPS 8.x). Your applications are probably written using ESQL/C 5.x; if so, you will need to recompile them using CSDK 2.8x (and hence ESQL/C 9.5y). Unless you are cheating, very little has changed; I would expect your code to recompile without problems. If you are already using CSDK to talk to the 5.x database, then you don't have to recompile (though upgrading to the latest version is not a bad idea). DB-Access in 9.x works the same as in 5.x unless you are playing some really fancy tricks with it. You later said you have a couple hundred tables to migrate, but no indication of the data volume. There isn't a simple in-place migration, so you will need to assume that you have to use DB-Export to get the data out of the OnLine 5.x system and DB-Import to load it into the new 9.x system. Check the database.sql file carefully to ensure you have the correct extent sizes and the like. IDS 9.x has a lot of features that were not in 5.x. You will need to review your sqlhosts file (it was optional in 5.x; it is mandatory in 9.x). You will need to set $INFORMIXSERVER in the environment. You will need to review the ONCONFIG file (use $ONCONFIG, not $TBCONFIG which was used by 5.x). You should consider whether to use fragmented tables, detached indexes, temporary dbspaces, and so on. However, a simple-minded migration will very largely work. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2003.04 -- http://dbi.perl.org/
