I normally set all the parameters to 1000, 2000 on a large installation. Also I set the SHM patameters to allow at least 1000 per process. You will waste less than 1/2Mb this way. Most machine i work with have at least 128Mb of memory. I figure if you are down to you r last 0.5Mb i.e. 0.5% of memory then it's probably time to upgrade. Luck I did this because a customer was having problems with a package called SONNET for printing on Sun's. Once I bumped the parameters up that started working as well!!
