JDBC type for Informix TEXT column?

The Informix JDBC driver, version 3.70.JC7 and earlier, when run against an Informix 11.70 server on Linux, reports that the JDBC type of a TEXT column is java.sql.Types#LONGVARCHAR. This seems OK. When we call resultSet.getObject("columName") on that column, however, it returns a byte[]. I would have expected a String. TEXT is a character data type, albeit a large object one, but still.
