Version 5 and below require an additional product called I-Star/I-Net (depending on the engine type). Versions 6 and up have all the distribution stuff built in. There is also an XA compliant version that can distribute (via XA) to non-Informix databases. I wouldn't advise this because then you have to deal with other databases :-) > - Does it use transparency? I presume you mean "is the data access location transparent?" By setting up synonyms (once) in your system catalogs, you can hide physical locations from users and programmers. The Oracle7 vs. Sybase advert sums it up pretty well, and the Informix code would be the same as the Oracle7 code, i.e. very simple. > - What is his adventage to respect others database? Informix's advantages over other databases... Firstly, let me stress that I am a programmer, not a salesman, so although I'm biased, it's not because I have unreasonable ideas. The primary advantage Informix has is price/performance on the engine side. I mean, check out the TPC-C benchmark ads. The other thing is that all databases are pretty much the same. Although a lot of claims are made by other vendors, I've never met a feature in a competitive database that Informix didn't have or couldn't fake. I think they don't market it aggressively enough. But (speaking as a programmer), I think the major advantage is the toolset, which is really well balanced between ease of development and flexibility. We have written 3 different code generators in the 4GL. Try doing that in Oracle's Forms! I have also written systems ranging from Warehouse management through to Time and Access control through to medical aid packages and have never had to resort to C for anything other that accessing things like bar code readers or odd radio devices! Down here in South Africa, we have a pretty full complement of database and tool vendors and we currently have about 75% or more of the local Unix database market.
