Carter Sr.) Organization: Numerical Aerodynamic Simulation Facility NASA We are looking to determine what the advantages and disadvantages are of converting to ON-LINE. If anyone out there has already made the switch from the Standard Engine to ON-LINE, was it easy or difficult? Did it take a lot of time? Is special knowledge required? How much of your original 4GL and ESQLC code was left pretty much intact? Without getting my hands on the real stuff I can't say that the literature about ON-LINE tells me all I need to know about these things. All we need a database for is just about any kind of information retrieval and reporting you can think of. Our major in-house application keeps track of the thousands of users around the world who have logins on one or more of the hundreds of machines we have networked together - and it handles all the account administration pretty much automatically. Another use is to track every file that ever got put on one of the VAX systems, including all its permutations. Changes to files can happen thousands of times an hour. Do you think ON-LINE has any real value for these kinds of uses? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ John R.
