It appears that 4GL does not know that the line is still on the screen. The "smart" screen painting done by Informix will not rewrite areas of the screen that have not changed. So writing blanks to the error line will not have any effect if Informix thinks that blanks are already there! Does pressing ^R to refresh the screen eliminate the unwanted message? If so, I have some 4GL-callable code to access the ^R functionality. You could use this in place of your 'ERROR ""' lines, which might help.
