Informix won't work with yp?

We get 468: Cannot obtain user id from system: unable to start database engine. This is on an HP 800. I noticed that root was able to run informix. So I hacked the local password file to include a non-yp account. THAT user was also able to run informix. Is it a known bug that informix will not run with yp? (I certainly hope not!) -- Or is there -- hopefully -- a better solution to this problem?
