Having installed Informix, I am now ready to initialize and start creating
dbspaces, but when I run oninit -i, I get the following obscure message :
oninit: Not enough room in ROOT DBspace.
Requested 389764K, ONCONFIG value 'ROOTSIZE' 128000K.
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory initialization
What's wrong ?
TIA

Check your device for ROOTDBSPACE and make it greater to e.g. 400000k
Set ROOTSIZE TO 400000 in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/onconfig (or wherever your onconfig
is)

There's no space in ROOTDBS ??? Make it bigger

Your root dbspace (128MB) is not large enough to contain the overhead and
reserved pages (about 100K), PHYSFILE (physical log size), and LOGSIZE *
LOGFILES (total size of all logical logs) and still have room for the
SYSMASTER and SYSUTILS database (about 20MB). What did you set in the
ONCONFIG file for these disk initialization parameters?
Art S. Kagel
Reduce your physical log and this will fix your problem.
Look at the onconfig.std values! Set the physical log
size to something other than the default AFTER oninit-iy.
You actually don't need to touch it at all, if you read
your manuals.
AFTER you complete the oninit -iy, you should read the manuals
on how to roll the physical log out to its own dbspace.
( I'll not give it away here, it's too easy. :-) Then you
wouldn't learn anything.
Your default rootdbs space is far larger than it will ever have to
be if you roll out your logical logs into their own dbspace and
the physical log into its own dbspace. This will allow you to
customize your logs for your environment. It will also reduce
the risks associated with everything in the rootdbs, and using
one hard drive for these files.
