The story only said that Oracle was willing to pony up 2Billion and then the rest would be for HP to come to the table with cash. I really have to wonder about the break up fee IBM had negotiated with Sun. With respect to Jonathan, I would imagine he'd float with the Java Stuff so he'd go to Oracle until his handcuffs are taken off and then he'll just cash out and do his own start up or VC fund. ;-) IMHO Oracle has to make a serious bid, even if it means taking on the hardware piece only to spin it out as its own entity. The java IP alone is worth the money because if you don't have Oracle or some other large company, IBM would control a large chunk of Java IP and be the center of the sphere of influence over the next generation of IDE tools and component direction of Java. I'm a little bit amazed that OSF hasn't started to raise a stink about the deal. Perhaps they're waiting to see what IBM/Sun agree to? -G
