Serial Numbers Skipping

In one of my databases, I have a field declared as serial. It was working fine until it got to 39184. Then the next number that was assigned was 2,038,451. No records exist between 39,184 and the 2 million number. I need to keep the same serial number that has been assigned to each record. How can I get the serial number back to 39,000?? just rebuild the database? Thanks..
