SYBASE: Sets TPC-C record for Sun platform!!!

Hello Below is a "press release" of an audited Sybase SQL Server 11 benchmark. I hope you find it informative. To those that find this offensive, or as advertisement please accept my apologies. My intent here is to inform people of the upcomming Sybase SQL Server 11 release performance and scalibility. Francisco Date: 3 Oct 95 15:58:41 EDT Subject: SYBASE ACHIEVES LEADING PERFORMANCE ON SUN PLATFORM SYBASE ACHIEVES LEADING PERFORMANCE ON SUN PLATFORM Sun and Sybase Demonstrate World-Class Scalability Through 16 Processors MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - October 3, 1995 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Sybase, Inc. announce the first benchmark results for SQL Server 11 achieving the best-ever UNIX relational database performance on Sun (TM) systems. The result represents a new performance record on the Sun platform for the Transaction Processing Performance Council Benchmark C (TPC-C) for UNIX servers by posting a rate of 4544.60 transactions per minute (tpmC) at a price/performance of $396 per tpmC demonstrating the superior scalability achieved by the two companies. World-Class Scalability Through 16 Processors The tests for Sybase SQL Server 11 were conducted on Sun's SPARCcenter TM 2000E server, with 16 processors running on the Solaris TM 2.4 symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) operating environment. Five Sun SPARCstorage TM Array disk storage subsystems, with a total storage of 320 gigabytes, were used for the database. Sybase SQL Server 11 delivers 3.5 times the performance achieved previously with Sybase SQL Server 10. Sun's partnership with Sybase spans over 11 years and includes joint engineering activities which have resulted in outstanding Sybase database performance and scalability on Sun systems. "As evidenced by these results, SQL Server 11 is an ideal relational database for scalable, SMP environments," said Carl Stolle, director of server marketing, Sun Microsystems Computer Company. "Sun has been especially impressed with the overall quality of SQL Server 11, and has been working closely with Sybase to ensure the highest levels of reliability and performance on Sun SPARCserver (TM) systems." "Our goal is to establish Sybase's performance leadership on SMP configurations," said Dennis McEvoy, vice president, enterprise products division at Sybase. "Sybase has achieved a new level of performance and scalability on 16 processors and will continue to optimize Sybase 11 to deliver higher throughput on Sun's industry leading SMP architecture." TPC-C Benchmark Predicts Real-World Database Performance The TPC-C benchmark simulates an order entry environment for a warehouse operation. The benchmark has gained broad industry acceptance because it is considered to be similar to "real-world" processing. By simulating the activities found in complex Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) application environments, the TPC-C benchmark exercises a system's breadth of components associated with such environments. Sybase, Inc. is a worldwide leader in client/server software. Sybase and its wholly owned subsidiary Powersoft Corporation are focused on four major market segments: mass deployment, on-line transaction processing, data warehousing and electronic commerce. Sybase's software products -- database, middleware and tools -- provide customers with desktop to enterprise solutions. The company's mission is to provide its customers with an open, adaptable information systems architecture that enables them to develop and deliver complete information systems solutions to facilitate rapid business change. Headquartered in Emeryville, CA, Sybase is the sixth largest independent software company in the world. Sun Microsystems Computer Company is a world leader in the design, manufacture and sale of network computing systems and is a division of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Recognized for quality and innovation, the company's SPARCTM workstations and multiprocessing servers each hold the No. 1 UNIX marketshare position.
