Re: IDS 11 - Press Releases
Posted in 2007
Not a technical problem thread: it's an opinion/flame discussion sparked by a roundup of IDS 11 (Cheetah) press releases. 'Tool' predicts IBM will announce Cheetah and then do no marketing, letting Oracle 11g steal the spotlight, and complains that unlike Oracle, SQL Server, Sybase and MySQL, Informix offers no unrestricted, non-timebombed free developer copy. Others point to the 11.10 beta, the ~$800 IBM developer program and the IIUG edition, while another poster argues Oracle Standard Edition One is far cheaper. No technical issue and no resolution recorded.

Just out of curiosity, but what exactly are you going to do if you are wrong? I mean since you guarantee it? ----- Original Message ---- From: Tool <tool@thetool.com> To: informix-list@iiug.org Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2007 4:34:37 PM Subject: Re: IDS 11 - Press Releases I guarantee this, please save this message for next month. Here's what's going to happen. IBM will announce the release of Cheetah at the beginning of the month, followed by absolutely nothing after that. NOTHING! Next, Oracle will be announcing with great fanfare their next release, within a few days of Informix's release. They will offer a no-timebomb trial, or whatever, without restrictions, and lots of marketing to go with it. Lots of promotion, fanfare, marketing buzz, and totally overshadow anything IDS had. I guarantee that IBM won't be doing shit about Informix once they release it next month. GUARANTEED. No developer programs or marketing, no excitement, no buzz, no marketing, A BIG NOTHING. I GUARAN-FUCKING-TEE IT. Press releases are important, but they offer nothing but opinions about the product, and as you've already seen the press has already yawned over IDS. Timmy, You've been asking for a free version of IDS to play with. Take the IDS 11.10 beta. That should have all of the components. You can now play with it. If you want support cough up the $800 USD. And thats for all the internal use stuff from IBM's SWG. With your bet, I wouldn't make such a bet. After the initial PR (today) there will probably be a bit of a lull between now and the GA release. Lets face it, some of these guys have been on the road for several weeks straight. Also its the end of the qtr. So people will go back to focusing on how to help the sales team and BPs close deals. But then there's July. I'll wager after the 5th, things will pick up. As to Oracle? Their FY ends this month. Lots of hooplah there. And then there will be a lull. Of course with Oracle, its all smoke and mirrors. >From: Tool <tool@thetool.com> >:-) > >Good question! > >I don't know!! > >-t- > >Mark Jamison wrote: > > > > Just out of curiosity, but what exactly are you going to do if you are > > wrong? > > I mean since you guarantee it? > > > > > > ----- Original Message ---- > > From: Tool <tool@thetool.com> > > To: informix-list@iiug.org > > Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2007 4:34:37 PM > > Subject: Re: IDS 11 - Press Releases > > > > I guarantee this, please save this message for next month. > > > > Here's what's going to happen. > > > > IBM will announce the release of Cheetah at the beginning of the month, > > followed by absolutely nothing after that. Thanks Gumpy. By the way, it's a matter of principle at this point. I pay for a lot of software that I use to develop applications with. But on this one I feel that if I can get Oracle without a timebomb, and SQL-Server, and Sybase, and MySQL, then by golly, I should be able to get the same for Informix. I shouldn't have to pay doodly squat for the software that I'm ultimately going to promote --FOR FREE-- for IBM. It's a win-win for IBM. The stakes are high for IBM, but they apparently want to work from the top down, instead of the ground up, in how they approach the database market. What they are missing is the biggest market, and the biggest market driver, the smaller shops and smaller developer operations that actually bubble up into the larger organizations and larger sales. One developer who can shout about the product is worth more than any sales rep coming in and trying to blow smoke with a powerpoint slide. So, I thought a lot about this one. I am really certain that IBM will bungle the next month, not only misunderstanding what Oracle is doing, but the other players out there as well, simply because they will be going after a few big fish, placate the status quo and forget the SMB market, even though Sam P. sez this is where he wants to go. Nobody is going after that market at IBM in reality, because of how the management structure works. Nobody is allowed to innovate on their own, that is tantamount to career suicide at IBM. The idea that they would have people instead of sychophants and robots in the game working with real developers is so contrary to how IBM works that IDS really doesn't stand a chance. Sorry to remain locked in a pessimistic mode, but statistics and probability are on my side. It's not eve a stretch at this point to predict what won't happen next. -t- Ian Michael Gumby wrote: > > Timmy, > > You've been asking for a free version of IDS to play with. > Take the IDS 11.10 beta. Timmy, You lost me here. Principal? What Principal? Other companies have "free" versions of their software that they seed the development community with. Sans support of course. And that is their choice. If you don't want to cough up the dough ($800) for IBM's deal, don't. But IBM does have a developers program that is implemented SWG (SOFTWARE GROUP) wide. $800 is not a lot of money for *free* software and tech support. I've been involved in other developer programs and they were a lot more money. Remember that there is a cost associated with running a developers program. mysql isn't free. Maybe to play with, but if you deploy a production version of your app, you need to pay them. Don't believe that they won't come looking for you when it comes compliance time. So really, give the "free" thing a rest. You can always wait and use the IIUG version which will have most of the functionality you're looking for. >Thanks Gumpy. > >By the way, it's a matter of principle at this point. I want some of what you've been drinking. You've got to be kidding. Why would someone pay $800 for what they can get from a competitor for a fraction of the cost. http://oraclestore.oracle.com/OA_HTML/ibeCZzpHome.jsp?minisite=10021&respid=22372&grp=STORE&language=US Scroll down to Oracle Standard Edition One Click on the drop down and choose "Named User Plus Perpetual." I see $149 and adding 15% for full support is still less than $200. Do the math. Your claim that it is less than what others charge does not compare well with reality. -- Daniel A. Morgan
