Interval data type

Dear Friends, How do i extract values from an interval data type(defined in informix) into a powerbuilder variable? i want to calculate the number of years from a specific date based on the interval values. The data type defined in Informix as INTERVAL YEAR TO MONTH. If for example, the value in the database is 5-3 which means 5 Years and 3 months how do i extract the individual Year and Month into two variable defined as Var_Year and var_month? or can i directly do a calculation on the date variable with interval variable to arrive at a particular date? example, 12/2/96 + 5-3 which should give result of 12/5/2001.
