Re: INFORMIX - esql/c - DB-connection

Ouch. Using 4.1x ESQL/C with 7.xx Engines is not going to be singularly efficient -- you should use 7.x ESQL/C. However, it can be made to work; I'm not sure that it is a supported combination, though, so you should (a) check whether it is officially supported and (b) if not, plan to upgrade. You need to ensure that the both machines are listed in /etc/hosts or the NIS equivalents on both machines. You either need to have /etc/hosts.equiv list the machines as equivalent on the server or your users will have to set up .rhosts entries for the purpose. The matching is done by user name, not user id. You need to ensure that both machines are using the same /etc/services or NIS equivalent. More precisely, they need to agree on the service (port number) that they will use. On the client machine, you need to set up $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts so that when your client applications connect to dbase@server, the server machine is identified, and the correct service name is used, etc. Note that the 4.1x sqlhosts file format is different from the format used in later versions! On the server side, you need to ensure that the OnLine system is set up to monitor the network connections. It is all messy o/s specific stuff, so there could be other things you need to do (not necessarily excluding reboots) to get this all to work. However, if any remote machine can access the server, then the only issues will be with /etc/hosts.equiv or .rhosts files, and getting the correct services, hosts and sqlhosts entries on the client side.
