Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Mark asked whether an HDR pair could run between IDS 11 and IDS 9.4UC7, so he could fall back to 9.4 if the upgrade caused performance problems. Answers were clear: no — HDR requires both servers to run identical binaries, and logical log record differences between versions would break recovery. Enterprise Replication, however, works across 11 and 9.4 and can keep servers in sync during an upgrade. Art Kagel also outlined the in-place HDR upgrade steps: install the new version in a new directory on both machines, copy/adjust ONCONFIG and SQLHOSTS, shut both servers down, repoint INFORMIXDIR, then start the primary followed by the secondary.

Is it possible to set an HDR pair between and IDS 11 server and an IDS 9.4UC7
server? We are having an issue with IDS 11 (posted in another thread) and want
to be able to fall back to 9.4 if there are speed issues after the upgrade.
Thanks,
Mark

No it's not. There are going to be logical log record differences that would
break recovery between the 2 versions.

No
HDR requires that the primary and secondary be running the same executa=
ble
binaries.
ER, however will work just find between 11 and 9.4

Can we upgrade the two servers to IDS 11.1 without breaking HDR? If we bring
both servers down, perform the upgrade and bring them back up, will HDR still
be intact or do we need to break it, upgrade and then create the HDR pair?
If it can be done, is there a specific order that the servers should be
upgraded?
Thanks,
Mark
No, HDR pairs must be identical. You can use ER to maintain sync between
servers during an upgrade. If you don't have ER (ie you are using Express
or Workgroup Edition for example), you may be able to get a short term
license for ER from IBM just for the upgrade period. Contact IBM.

You have to:
- Install 11.50 or 11.10 on both servers into new directories (not the
existing INFORMIXDIR).
- Copy the ONCONFIG file and SQLHOSTS file from the existing INFORMIXDIR
to the new one.
- Make any adjustments to the ONCONFIG file to take advantage of new
features.
- Shut down both servers.
- Point the INFORMIXDIR link to the new installation.
- Start the primary using the new version.
- Start the secondary using the new version.
