I hope who ever hired you to do this project knows that you have no clue what you are doing. In the type of environment you describe you should be more concerned with security then if the data base will support a lot of tables. You should be considering the top contenders in the database arena, and if you know anything about databases there are three, maybe four if you look to Microsoft. Just remember you get what you pay for.
