DB2 LOBs use an algorithm which alters the read/write unit to refelect the size of the data being moved. If you are reading and writing hundreds of megabytes, DB2 will use sizes of 64-128 Mbytes. If you are reading dozens of kilobytes, DB2 will use sizes of 4-8 Kbytes and so on. >2) Blobs don't get written in the logs (saves space) DB2 gives you the option of logging or not. >3) Blobs don't get read into shared memory (unless you want to) DB2 has a similar feature. >4) Blobs can reside in a seperate blobspace (DBSPACE), > not in the tablespace. Same for DB2. In addition, DB2 supplies a bunch of built-in, ANSI SQL operators to work on LOBs: - concatenation, substring, translation, length, and pattern matching One can use these operators on LOB data directly or one can create a "handle" (I believe it's now called a locator) which refers to a LOB. By performing operations on the handle, one defers the movement of data, saving potentially huge amounts of time. It also allows easy piecemeal access to LOBs and increases the performance of many LOB operations by orders of magnitude. Also, DB2 allows one to directly load LOBs from existing files via an SQL interface. In addition, file system files may be loaded from LOBs in the database. If you are truly interested in these features and would like more formal information (or to be involved with early customer testing) send Gene Kligerman (kligrmn@torolab2.vnet.ibm.com) an email. Pat
