How To Remove Old Instance (show in onstat -g dis)
Posted in 2013
Problem: after upgrading an HDR pair from 11.70.FC4 to FC7, "onstat -g dis" on the secondary still listed an old, down FC4 instance (even showing the other host's name), while the primary listed only one. Answers explained that the report is built from /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs plus the $INFORMIXDIR/etc/.conf.<INFORMIXSERVER> files (not onconfig.*), which Informix writes at startup and never cleans up; stale files likely came from copying directories between hosts. Suggested fix: remove the leftover .conf.* (and possibly .infos.*) entries and clear /INFORMIXTMP before the next engine restart. The poster didn't confirm success, so no verified resolution is recorded.

Hi All,
I wanted to know that if Informix keeps a list of all instances that has been
created on the machine? if yes, where it stores this information?
Actually, I have upgraded my IDS version from 11.70 FC4 to IDS 11.70 FC7 on
both HDR-primary & HDR-secondary servers, and when i execute the command
(onstat -g dis) on HDR-secondary, it is showing me two instances, one using
the IDS 11.70 FC7 and the second is using the IDS 11.70 FC4. However, the same
command runs fine on HDR-primary and it show only one instance in IDS 11.70
FC7.
So i wanted to know why the output is not same on both servers. Although, the
instance shown in IDS 11.70 FC4 is down, but still i want to know that how to
fix this information.
Can someone tell me that if Informix engine keep any list of instances, if yes
then how to edit this information?
Another problem, I can see in the output below is that it shows the second
instance in the different host. I am running this command on the host
(production4) and it is showing the second instance in (production8), which is
HDR-primary for this host.
However, when i execute the same command on the HDR-primary (production4), it
is showing the correct output with only one instance. Please see the output
below.
Output of "onstat -g dis" command (from HDR-Secondary, host: production8)

Response:
onstat -g dis is looking in the file (on Unix) /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs to findall the Informix product installations...after that, I believe it is looking
in each INFORMIXDIR path it finds in that file and in the etc directory
attached to those paths looking for any .conf.* files and reporting what it
finds.
So it would seem on your primary you've either removed the directory where the
old version had been installed so it can't get to that directory, or that
directory contains no .conf.* files to look at. But on your secondary, those
files exist so onstat -g dis finds them.

Hi Jacques,
Thanks for your response.
I have looked into the .infxdirs files at both primary & secondary server and
have found the following output:
# From Primary Server
informix@production4> cat /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs
/usr1/informix_1170FC4
/usr1/informix_1170FC7
# From Secondary Server
informix@production8> cat /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs
/usr1/informix_1170FC4
/usr1/informix_1170FC7
In the secondary (production8) server, with the /usr1/informix_1170FC4/etc/
directory, I have also found the onconfig file of the other primary instance.
But, after moving this file from the location, when i execute the command
(onstat -g dis) it is still showing the same output having both instances.
So by removing the file, the problem is still not fixed. I have even tried
restarting the instance as well, but the output is still the same.
Do i need to perform any additional steps as well?
I will be waiting for your response.
Thanks

Response:
The file isn't the onconfig file, but a file that I believe on your system
would be called $INFORMIXDIR/etc/.conf.prd_hq_tcp. So it's
.conf.<INFORMIXSERVER>. That file is different then the onconfig file for that
server which is /usr1/informix_1170FC4/etc/onconfig.prd_hq_tcp.

The onstat -g dis report reads the files in /INFORMIXTMP which are written
by an engine at startup and are never deleted by informix. It is likely
that there are files in there from the past that were once on production4.
Is it possible that the administrators built production8 by copying
directories from production4 way back when?

Next time you bounce the informix engine, delete all the files in
/INFORMIXTMP before restarting informix and the onstat -g dis output should
be fixed.

maybe you need to remove .infos. files relating to instance in $INFORMIXDIR/etc
