Let me reiterate the advice I give everyone who is migrating from 5.xx
to 7.xx. Migrate your applications to 7.xx first, they will run even
better than the native 5.xx programs against the 5.xx server, they just
need a 7.xx runtime environment and a pipe or network connection to the
5.xx engine. Then once the apps are recompiled and tested with minimal
changes, perhaps to take advantage of new ESQL or 4GL features that are
engine independent, such as multiple connections, you can upgrade the
engine confident that the apps will continue to work just fine. The
last step is to reengineer the converted apps to take advantage of new
engine features. This is the upgrade method I use, it is the least
intrusive and the most likely to succeed while your head still has
hair.
Some have shaken their heads at me in the past when I gave this advice.
Richard's sad tail is the proof of what can happen if you try it the
other way round.
