ANSI databases with esqlc

We have a simple esqlc program that updates a column in a table. It works fine with all of our standard Informix environments. When we try to run the same program on the ANSI environment, we get the error 243: -243 Could not position within a table table-name. What do we need to do to make this work in the ANSI environment?
