[ My comments is based on experience with Oracle 6 ... ] If you by porting mean converting an ESQL application to Pro*C I can give you some idea. I've been working a lot with Oracle during several years and a little bit with Informix and ESQL. : Any idea/pointers/helpful-experiences that anyone of you has/had : that did this. I have never worked with Oracle before, I've used : Informix for a year or so. The amount of work it takes mostly depend on how your ESQL code is written. If it is written according to the ansi constraints and does not use any of the more sophisticated access methods such as dynamin SQL, it should be a straight forward light weight porting where some lines has to be syntactically changed. If the code uses much of dynamic SQL, sqlda struct manipulation etc, there will be more of "learing advanced Pro*C and thinking" to do the job. Another problem which could be complicated is if your ESQL code uses structs as host variables. Pro*C does not handle this. Data types DATE and TIME in Informix does not have their exact equivalence in Oracle. Oracle data type DATE holds both date and time. There are other data type differences that you have to study carefully first. One big drawback is that Pro*C does not do any macro expansion (cpp). This can on the other hand been taken care of by writing a simple wrapper around Pro*C that first call cpp to expand macros and then runs Pro*C on the expanded code. : any tools out there that would do the job automatically or even : 50% of the work. I dont know any tools. However for transfering data the two products contain tools for export and import which makes this fairly easy. -- Bj|rn Smith Compound Systems, phone +46 8 7923689 UUCP: {uunet, mcsun}!seunet!comsys!smith Domain Address: smith@compound.se
