It generally does not give a 2x performance increase due to the extra load of managing a multi-processing system. YMMV > Which would have the better performance NT / Unix ? Is performance really an issue? Do you have a lot of users or data? If perfomance is a big concern, why not purchase bigger hardware? Although one OS might be faster than the other, I doubt the difference would be reason enough to use one over the other. It is likely that other, less obvious, considerations are more important. Think about which OS you would rather be using. Which one has a toolset that you are comfortable with and can use? Which one do you feel most confident with? Which one do you think you can get the job done with? > Could I port my 4gl, reports, etc .. to NT ? Will you be using this new machine as a client, as well? Is this all automated background type processing? Unix seems to be a more comfortable environment for doing that sort of thing. > > Does any one have any thoughts. One more thing-if you go with Unix, see if Solaris x86 is available. Although I've never used Solaris on intel, I've used SCO and and I'd rather use Solaris. SCO will get the job done, though.
