RE: Script for determining the number of user lice
Posted in 2009
A user asked for the script IBM auditors use to count user licences for IDS. The answer given (confirmed by IBM as correct for IDS 10 and 11): select sh_curmaxcons, sh_ovlmaxcons from sysmaster:sysshmvals — note these are high-water marks of concurrent sessions (since last restart and since rootdbs initialisation), not current counts, and they only ever increase. It counts real user sessions, not PDQ threads or internal threads like page cleaners. For 11.50, sysmaster:sysfeatures was suggested, holding weekly maximum usage (connections, VPs, memory, size) for five years. The asker was satisfied.

Does anyone have access to the script that IBM uses to determine how many user licenses are required for IDS licensing? I need to run this to ensure compliance. Thanks.
This is the sql script that the IBM auditors are using:
select sh_curmaxcons CURRENT_USERS, sh_ovlmaxcons MAX_USERS
from sysmaster:sysshmvals
Note that as I observed to the auditors, sh_curmaxcons doesn't count
current sessions, it counts the maximum number of concurrent sessions
(both external and internal) since the server was last restarted.
sh_ovlmaxcons counts the maximum number of concurrent sessions since the
rootdbs was initialized. I provided them with the output from onstat -u
| grep max for every run of their script to hammer that point home.

The previously posted query is correct for both IDS 10 and 11. Other
things are required for the older releases. I understand your need to
demonstrate the validity of the numbers by showing some detail using
onstat reports. However, the auditors will rely on those values in the
sysmaster database.

does this script take into account when a single user has spawned off
several other threads ... for example doing some PDQ stuff ... onstat -u
will show a bunch of sessions for the one session ... Also, does it strip
out the extra session that onstat -u shows when an instance has been
initialized, but no users are connected ....

Yes, that query is the correct count of the sessions (not threads)
established by real users, without counting the page cleaners, etc. that
are reported by onstat -u. The counter is sessions, not threads. The
counter, as has been noted, is the high-water mark, not the current count.
The counters only increase, never decrease. In addition, there's no
record kept of when that high-water mark was reached. That would be a
useful addition.

For those on 11.50 I would look at a table called sysmaster:sysfeatures.
This will
give usage information by week. The information will be kept for 5 years.
The
information in each row tracks the maximum usage for that week.
