Concurrent User License question
Posted in 2011
Jack planned a RHEL5 / IDS 11.5 / PHP setup with 4GL called from the web front end, and asked whether a 5 "concurrent user" 4GL runtime licence could cover many simultaneous users and ~10K transactions/day. Art said throughput wouldn't be a problem on decent hardware but licensing counts actual concurrent sessions. Others quoted IBM's licence wording: every logical connection (including multiple sessions from one user, and batch jobs) counts separately, and connection concentrators don't reduce the count; authorized-user or PVU licensing may suit better. Jack accepted this.

Hi All, I am planning to setup a new server. I would like to use RHEL5, IDS11.5 + PHP as frontend tool. My question is, can a 5 concurrent user can accomodate 10K transactions per day? example different users around 1000 simultaneously? Thanks for your inputs in advance.
??? Not sure what you are asking here Jack??? What does "a 5 concurrent user can" mean? Lots of other questions come to mind: Your ability to handle up to 1000 concurrent connections will depend on the volume of queries, their complexity, and the hardware more than anything. so: - How many CPU cores? - How big is the database? - How many spindles will you have to distribute the data across? - What does an average query look like? 10,000 transactions a day isn't a major issue. On the right platform you should be able to handle 10,000 transactions a minute and more. Art Art S. Thanks Art. I'm going to use a 1 x quad core CPU. 8 x 200 GB Hdisk. The question comes in my mind is if the will be any bottlenecks. My question actually is if simultaneously users can logged in into the system if I purchase a 5 user "concurrent" license of the 4GL runtime. The 4GL codes will be called via Php interface.
The concurrent 4GL user license is counted against the maximum number of users actually running 4GL apps at any given moment. If the apps are on a web server, I think they count the maximum number of users connected to the web server concurrently. Is that the question? Art Art S. Yes Art. That's the question i'm asking. Does that mean, if i have user1 and user2...user10, I logged in as user1 and executed user1 five (5) times, does it mean i already consumed the 5 4GL runtime license? So, i can't logged in as user2....user10 anymore? Thanks,
Hmm, it's confusing and IBM's documentation doesn't help. For the database it is clearly connections, but for applications, like 4GL, I know there is some recognition that an app may take multiple connections to the server and IB they count as a single user for the 4GL license. However, if you have user1 logged into five OS sessions each running a 4GL app, that may count as five concurrent users. Art Art S. Hi Jack, Please refer to IBM License Information document http://www-03.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf/lilookup/69A8F2FD78A3B66E87256CEF00 747DA4?opendocument&li_select=F4734922B1BF59F187256CEF00747D9F Concurrent Session - A Concurrent Session, at a given point in time, is each logical connection, existing at that time, between the Program and an end user interface device. Each such existing connection is counted as a Concurrent Session whether or not it is actually in use. If an individual end user establishes multiple connections, each one is counted as a separate Concurrent Session, even if they share a common physical pathway. The number of connections is not reduced by any program or machine, such as a front-end server or multiplexer, which may be used to concentrate the connections. Each batch process being executed at the same time is also considered to be a Concurrent Session. On Wed, Nov 9, 2011 at 9:26 PM, JACK PAPA <informix2009@gmail.com> wrote: > Yes Art. HI Jack, As far as licensing is concerned, you should be aware that using the concurrent user model, every single session connected to the engine is counted. So if you have 100 physical users and only 30 concurrent users max access the engine, using this type of licence is best for you. However, if you use more sessions than the number of concurrent users purchased, you risk compliance. IBM checks the highest nummber of connected sessions taht you had at on point in time. However, if you purchase 5 authorized registered users (physical users), you can have for example 10 sessions for a particular user and you will OK. I you use the PVU model, the number of users or concurrent users (sessions) is irelevant, it based on the number of cores your physical machine or virtual machine uses. Bare in mind that a concurrent session is more expensive than an Authorized user. Note: if you use a transaction monitor (TUXEDO for expample) or a way to mutualize an engine connection, the way to count the sessions is different. Thanks a lot guys, appreciate your inputs on this licensing question.
