Onweb

A poster asked where to find documentation/white papers for installing Informix ONWeb (the browser-based database server admin tool) on Solaris. Another reader answered by pasting the ONWeb CD README material: product description, supported platforms and tar file names (onweb-1.00.UC1.sun.tar for Solaris 2.6), root-level install requirements, unpacking steps, and a list of known issues. The rest of the thread turns into criticism that ONWeb bundles and installs its own Perl and Apache, potentially clashing with existing installations, plus complaints about downloading it via Intraware. No fix for that concern is recorded.

Does anyone know where to find white papers for installing onweb on Solaris? Thanks in advance Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

Informix ONWeb -- The Browser-Based Database Server Tool
========================================================
With Informix ONWeb you can use a browser to perform
these common database-sever administration tasks:
- Checking dbspaces, database catalogs, logs, and other objects.
- Changing configuration parameters temporarily or permanently.
- Managing logical and physical logs
- Examining memory use and adding and freeing memory segments
- Reading the message log
- Changing the database server mode between on-line and off-line
and its intermediate states
- Backing up and restoring dbspaces
- Running various onstat commands to monitor performance
- Entering SQL statements and examining database schemas
- Adding and removing storage spaces, including spaces that
are unique to IDS with the UD Option and IDS.2000 database
servers
- Examining and managing user sessions
- Examining and managing Virtual Processors (VPs)
- Examining and managing processes and objects that are
unique to IDS with AD and XP Options and Informix EDS
database servers
Note:
An HTTP server running ONWeb can monitor only the database
servers that run on the node where it is installed for IDS,
IDS with the UD Option, and IDS.2000 database servers. For
IDS with AD and XP Options and Informix EDS database servers,
ONWeb should be installed on the node that hosts coserver 1,
and can monitor all coservers for that database server.
Late-Breaking News
-------------------------------------
The following information was received too late for inclusion in the
README file included in the ONWeb 1.00.UC1 release:
Additional Platforms:
- ONWeb has been tested on Digital Unix 4.0d
Additional Known Issues:
- 116878 On Unix, the installonweb program does not work
if the PERL5LIB happens to be set in the environment
- 116810 The link from Session Details to Process Details
should not be enabled if the process is on a remote computer
- 116862 Process Details shows incorrect information on Red Hat
and SuSe Linux
- 116827 For Informix 8.21 and 8.30 servers, the Cogroup Details
page for cogroup_all (only) is blank when viewed in Netscape
(the same information is available from the Coservers page,
however).
- 116903 The "Level 0 Backup" button on the Storage page doesn't
run onbar in the background, resulting in a browser timeout
(although the backup job will complete correctly).Commands run
from the Onbar page are run in the background, however.
- 116918 The verify option in the Onbar page invokes the archecker
utility, which is not supported by Informix.
- 116939 If the onconfig file contains errors, onbar commands may
terminate abruptly without ONWeb reporting an error. (Errors in
the onconfig file are reported in the server message log,
however).
What You Need to Install and Run ONWeb
-------------------------------------
On UNIX:
To install and run ONWeb you need
- to either be root or have the ability to run applications as root.
- to run the ONWeb installation script as root.
When you install ONWeb, the installation script installs
and configures the Perl and the Apache HTTP server.
What the Distribution Contains
---------------------------------
For UNIX:
The distribution contains all of the software that you
need to install and run ONWeb, including the Apache HTTP
server software.
When you install ONWeb as instructed in the README file
included in the distribution, the installation script
installs the Apache HTTP server and the ONWeb software.
Then you're ready to start ONWeb and edit the file that
ONWeb uses to discover the servers that you want to
monitor.
Unpacking the ONWeb Distribution
---------------------------------
1 Make a new directory to hold the ONWeb installation. There
is no reason for ONWeb to be installed into an INFORMIXDIR.
2 Choose the appropriate ONWeb product file.
Platform Product File Build OS
------------ ------------------------ -------------
Compaq/DEC onweb-1.00.FC1.dec.tar Digital V4.0d
HP onweb-1.00.UC1.hp.tar HP-UX 10.20
IBM onweb-1.00.UC1.ibm.tar AIX 4.2.1
Linux onweb-1.00.UC1.linux.tar Linux 2.2.5
(glibc 2.1.1, Red Hat)
Sequent onweb-1.00.UC1.seq.tar PTX 4.4.2
SGI onweb-1.00.UC1.sgin32.tar IRIX 6.2
Siemens onweb-1.00.UC1.sni.tar Reliant 5.43
Sun onweb-1.00.UC1.sun.tar Solaris 2.6
3 Unpack the distribution into the new directory using the
'tar xf' command. An example is:
$ mkdir /usr/local/onweb
$ cd /usr/local/onweb
$ tar xf /mnt/cdrom/onweb-1.00.UC1.linux.tar
4 View the README file that is unpacked as part of the
distribution. It has instructions for completing the installation.

Hey Informix! You actually were dumb enough to let this software out of the lab!!!!! Such stupidity! What on earth possessed you to include your own version of Perl and Apache???? Didn't you stop to think that maybe these two items were already installed on a platform???? HELLO! The developers and the managers that released this product are incompetents. Are you going to release your own C-compiler too? I can't believe the QA department let this one slip out the door too! When you release it again without including your own Perl and Apache distributions, then I'll use it, until then this product is total S H I T. I am totally amazed that this product, which was really anticipated could actually be released with such retarded thinking behind the release. Morons! This is exactly why I will never use and install OnWeb: > Direct from the OnWeb cd: ... > When you install ONWeb, the installation script installs > and configures the Perl and the Apache HTTP server. > > What the Distribution Contains > --------------------------------- > For UNIX: > The distribution contains all of the software that you > need to install and run ONWeb, including the Apache HTTP > server software. > > When you install ONWeb as instructed in the README file > included in the distribution, the installation script > installs the Apache HTTP server and the ONWeb software. Amazing... simply amazing... If you want to compromise your platform, attempt to install this on your server. I hope it doesn't screw up your system. Gee Tim, don't hold back, let it all out. Tell it like it is! Give 'em hell! Hi Art! :-) I found the only way Informix makes changes to the way they do things is to use the Foghorn Leghorn approach, like he does with the dog. Usually a stick of dynamite or a frying pan over the head seems to suffice. Asking them nicely goes unnoticed and nothing gets done. In this case, Onweb is total crap no matter what I say, because it could compromise your Perl and Apache installations if they are already installed. This is the first time I've ever seen a software release from Informix this bad...( well NewEra and Universal Server too, but who's counting ) This one tops them all. Tim "Art S. Mention in the c.d.i and next morning first thing I get a call saying me case is being escalated and they be getting a server setup just for my case! I've got UC3-1 CD a last week and I've put Online on but not had time to look in the other directories on the CD yet. I'm working 9am-8pm, 7 days a week and getting 15 minute lunchbreaks (if I don't forget to take lunch). Thinks have gone menthol here! >Tim > -- David Williams
David, I need to get the phone number of your drug supplier! :-) You do great drugs! OnWeb is over at intraware.com, where Informix chooses to release software instead of using their own site. Imagine, your company sells e-commerce solutions but doesn't have its own web site set up for e-commerce. Isn't that interesting? Informix doesn't even release their own software on their own site, and has to rely on another site, with incredibly bad bandwidth. Downloading from intraware is more painful than any other site I've been to. Anyway, if you want to risk your system, get OnWeb, and have fun! I'd like to see it installed and working but won't touch it till they fix it. Tim David Williams wrote: > > Does OnWeb come on the Online 7.31 disks?
