Core Dump problems

Our product is written & distributed in RDS (4.1x) and run with SE 5.0x. We have problems at some sites (both ICL DRS6000 and Motrola) with occasional core dumps. We used to think it was due to a fron-end program we used back in the days before DBESCWT existed, but removing it hasn't cured the problem. I have managed to recreate it a while back by sending 'SIGHUP' to the program (Hangup) when it went into a vast loop instead of closing the database. Any thoughts out there?
