What does online_root do ?

Sounds like you need an experienced DBA. This question is so basic it
hurts to read it.
-- I figured I'd flame you before Obnoxio does it...... No offense
intended.
If you don't understand this error message are you sure you want to be
running oninit -i.
This will not only make your databases unaccessible but will actually
reinitialize your entire informix instance destroying any existing data.
I hope this is a new instance you intend to run. The rootdbs is where
informix builds the smi database that houses information regarding you
instance. Informix uses this database to manage the instance. Think of it
as catlogue tables for the instance. What informix is trying to do is to
connect to a disk drive, file system etc. In your $INFORMIXDIR/etc dir
there is a file called onconfig (onconfig.std if this has just been
installed), type echo $ONCONFIG to see what file name your instance will be
using, if it comes back blank then you should be using onconfig. In that
file there will be a reference to ROOTDBS. This is usually a link to a
device handler (raw device) or to a file (cooked files). The permissions
should be
owner = informix
group=informix
permission rw-rw----.
I would suggest that at the least you read the Informix DSA Administrator
guides, contract for a DBA to help you while you are learning and get to an
Informix class.
