>: I am looking for a good Administrator's guide to Informix OnLine Ver. 7. = >: A book called "INFORMIX-OnLine Dynamic Server Handbook, by Carlton Doe" = >: was recommended to me. Does anyone know whether this book is a good = >: administrator's guide to Online Ver. 7? I know of another book by Joe = >: Lumbley but that is for OnLine Ver. 5. I appreciate your help. THE Administrator's Guide is TFM. You really must read and understand it. In order to facilitate that, I use two copies: one in paper and one on CD-ROM. The CD version has a wonderful "search" utility that makes it easy to find all the many scattered references to any given topic. When you have a question, either to tech support or to c.d.i. it will greatly help your case to be able to include the line "I understand TFM and still want..." Many people like to have additional resources to compliment TFM. Carlton's book is an excellent entry-level description of OnLine and how it works. Be sure to monitor his web page at http://www.xmission.com/~dbaresrc for the latest corrections to his book. (And take advantage of his offers to make corrections, too. With any significant technical book there will be some error to be found. Don't just complain about it or speak ill of the author, be part of the solution.) Joe Lumbley's "Survival Guide" is much more than a version 5 reference. It has one of the best DBA job descriptions to be found. It is also a source of wit and wisdom for the real-life DBA who also wears the hats of the sysadmin, developer, and end user. I carry my copy with me much of the time. Finally, plan on attending an Informix course. This gives you yet another book to use, and also the chance to make all the mistakes on someone else's machine, with the help of peers and trainers to enhance your understanding.
