Lock Mode on syssyntable

We have a problem with a distributed database in that the first query to access a remote database through synonyms seems to be putting a lock on the syssyntable table. A second query hangs until the first query completes and releases the lock. The lock mode on the syssyntable seems to be block mode (Informix internal page locking). Can we change this to row level locking? Any other solutions or is this a bug?
