Hi Kerry, About the workload: You are spreading the workload when you use the RAID 5.The RAID 5 writes one block in one disk (you can configure that I think in my environment is 64K) and then the RAID "jumps" to other disk and so on. I really don't know this dbspace internal overhead you mentioned but if you find out something please let me know. About the RAID cache:Yes.You must have at least 32Mb in the RAID cabinet. You shoud check it to avoid the bad writing performance. I follow you on that one. But wouldn't each DBSPACE have its own internal tracking and overhead, and each one would be pulling/writing data to/from each separate DBSPACE? I think RAID addresses "fragmenting" the specific tables and dbspaces, but multiple dbspaces is another means of "spreading the workload", no? >About the temp dbspace, you should consider don't use the RAID 5 to store >it because I think the RAID is too expensive and you don't need its high >availability to protect the temp area . That is a very valid point. We should be able to designate a TEMP space on a regular drive by creating a raw device for it. That would free up some data space on the RAID drives. >And the last but not the least, you should have at least 32 Mb of RAID >cache if you don't want to have bad performance in the writing >operations. What??? Do you mean have 32 Mb of RAM available in the system, or have 32 Mb in the RAID cabinet/on the controller? Sorry for the confusion, but we have a separate group (employees of the client company) that handle systems administration.
