Dbaccess error followed by system hang

Whilst
running a scheduled daily dbexport which has been running for years we
experience this error this morning:
*** Error fetching data row.
25587 - Network receive failed.
Subsequently although onstat - revealed " Informix Dynamic Server 2000 Version
9.21.UC2 -- On-Line -- Up 05:10:16 -- 749568 Kbytes"
No one could access the database. I could not access onmonitor or dbaccess =
both timed out and the command onmode -ky did nothing.
Informix is running on SCO Unix v6 and I basically had to complete a cold boot
to get it accepting connections.
Any ideas?
Dave
Hi,
one possibility is that you ran out of file descriptors.
Network connections using sockets or TLI need to
open a separate file descriptor for each connection
(in addition to open files for chunks, message log,
etc.). SCO is known for having limits on these.
Beware that (I think) there are two limitations,
number of open file descriptors per process and also
for the whole system.
Additionally there may be a limitation in the shell for
number of open files. For this check "ulimit" (or "limit").
For some older versions (9.21.UC2 being really old !)
this was a potential problem.
Regards,
Martin
