But - when I cd to >/pub/informix, I cannot find meaty message files. The top-level directory of the message archive is /pub/informix/news. In that directory, the sub-directory "indexes" holds index files, while the sub-directory "volumes" holds the messages. Each volume corresponds to a calendar month, and is kept in a separate sub-directory of "volumes". Older volumes are moved to compressed tar files. Thus, "volumes" contains not only directories with names of the form "YYYY.MM" for recent volumes, but also files with names of the form "YYYY.MM.tar.Z" for older volumes. The "indexes" directory holds indexes for all messages in the archive, regardless of whether they have been moved to tar files. There are README files in all of the directories mentioned above that should provide more details. mathcs is currently experiencing a rather heavy processing load. If you're going to be FTPing a lot of files at one time, we'd prefer that you do it by the dawn's early light (Eastern time zone, USA). Overnight would be even better.
