You can run
dd if=/dev/___ of=output_file bs=5120 count=10
and then do an octal dump
od -c
on the output_file and you get Informix's tape header with a time
stamp and identifier of what kind of archive it is.
Check the syntax and you fill in whatever the device is for the if
specification.
